How to choose an outdoor rug size

A rug can bring an outdoor seating area together. Start with the space your furniture uses, then choose the size and shape that lets you sit, move and open doors comfortably.

Measure the arrangement first

  1. Place your furniture where you want to use it. Include the table, chairs and any nearby planters. If the furniture has not arrived, mark each piece's listed footprint on the floor with a removable marker suitable for the surface.
  2. Try the everyday movements. Pull out the chairs, sit down and get up. For a lounger, allow for its reclined position. Walk the routes you use through the space.
  3. Mark the proposed rug edges. Decide which furniture feet you want on the rug, then measure the marked length and width. Check whether chair feet would cross an edge as you move.
  4. Check the surroundings. Open nearby doors fully and look for steps, thresholds and drainage points. Keep these clear when choosing the rug's position.

Use the exact dimensions on the size selector

A size group such as “4 × 6” is a useful browsing label. The selected rug's dimensions are what you need for your floor plan. For example, the Marwood Flatweave Outdoor Rug includes these sizes:

  • 4′3″ × 5′11″ rectangle: 51 × 71 inches.
  • 5′3″ × 7′7″ rectangle: 63 × 91 inches.
  • 5′3″ round: 63 inches across the diameter.

Compare those measurements with your marked area. The product page shows the current size choices and availability; photographs illustrate the pattern and shape, and proportions vary by size.

Choose a shape for the space

Try a rectangle along a bench or a pair of chairs. A round rug is another option for a compact arrangement: mark the full circle before deciding. A runner can suit a longer, narrower space, provided it leaves your usual route comfortable. These are layout ideas; your measured arrangement determines the fit.

Check thickness and care before ordering

Marwood is a machine-woven, no-pile polypropylene rug listed at 0.16 inch thick and suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Check the space beneath a door against the rug and any pad you plan to use. Follow the care instructions for the exact rug, and check any pad's suitability for your outdoor surface.
