Choosing patio table and chair heights
A coordinated finish is a good starting point for outdoor furniture. To choose a table and chairs that work together, also compare the seating position, tabletop height and space underneath.
Start with how you will use the table
For meals, choose a table intended for dining and check its measurements against your chairs. For relaxed seating, compare the height and reach of a coffee or side table from your seated position. A familiar, comfortable arrangement at home can give you a useful point of comparison.
Two examples from Porchroom show why the product type matters:
- Hermosa Acacia Bistro Table has a round top measuring 27.5 inches in diameter and stands 29.5 inches high.
- Shore Aluminum Outdoor Coffee Table measures 39.5 inches wide × 23.5 inches deep × 15.5 inches high. It is a low table for relaxed seating.
Those are overall table dimensions. They do not, on their own, establish whether a particular chair will fit underneath.
Compare four measurements
- Seat height. Measure from the floor to the seating surface, including the cushion you intend to use. A chair's overall height measures to its highest point and is not a substitute for seat height.
- Space beneath the tabletop. Check the height from the floor to the lowest obstruction where you would sit. A frame or apron below the top can reduce the usable space for your legs.
- Chair-arm height. If you want the chair to tuck under the table, compare the arms' highest point with that underside clearance. Check the width between the table legs too.
- Base and leg position. Look at where table legs, crossbars or a pedestal meet your feet and chair legs. A tabletop's width does not describe the clear space underneath it.
Test the whole seating area
Mark the table and chair footprints on your patio using a removable marker suitable for the surface. Allow for chairs in use as well as tucked away, then check doors and walking routes. If you already own the chairs, sit in them and compare the proposed tabletop height and reach with a table you find comfortable.
Confirm the details that affect your choice
If seat height, chair-arm height or table clearance is missing from a listing, ask Porchroom before ordering. Include the exact table and chair names and any measurements of furniture you already own. Matching colors, photographs and suggested pairings are style guidance; they do not confirm physical compatibility.
